Artist's Description
This artwork series is based upon vintage US patent drawings of ingenious and notable inventions, in this case, an 1881 camera obscura patent by W. I. Taylor. The camera obsura is an optical device which is a precursor to modern photography and cameras. The device consists of a room or box with a hole in one side. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside, where it is reproduced, rotated 180 degrees (thus upside-down), but with color and perspective preserved. The image can be projected onto paper, and can then be traced to produce a highly accurate representation. This tool has been used by artists and philosophers for more than 2,400 years.
