This is a monochromatic mixed-media collage in blues created from layered tissue paper on canvas. To create the steampunk figures I began with old patent drawings of flying apparatus, artifical limbs, corsets, hoop skirts, dress forms, bicycles, gears, clockworks and other strange and wonderful inventions. I also used organic elements like line drawings of octopus, fish, and of course, beautiful vintage sketches of women and men. I deconstructed the patent drawings to discover interesting elements and then recombined them into new and creative combinations. The result was an amazing set of collaged steampunk figures! I then layered these collages with vintage French handwriting samples. The handwriting samples and steampunk girls were printed with archival pigment inks onto serveral sheets of tissue paper and then layered and collaged onto a 10" x 10" canvas. This gives a great depth to the final artwork, with offset layered handwriting showing through from the bottom layers. I...
